Dormston School uses Accelerated Reader with Years 7 and 8 to increase reading comprehension and promote reading for pleasure. Accelerated Reader is a computer program designed to motivate children of all ages to read. The software allows teacher’s to view current reading levels and create a personalized reading plan to support each child in the development of vital literacy skills. Regardless of ability every child can improve their reading with Accelerated Reader. The scheme will be available to all Key Stage Three pupils from September 2013.
STAR Reading Tests.
At the start of Year 7 every pupil will take an initial reading test to determine their current reading age and National Curriculum level. From these results we are able to determine a Zone of Proximal Development. The ZPD is the range of books that will challenge your child without causing frustration. Every pupil in Year 7 and 8 will have a reading test at the end of each term so that we can monitor their progress.
The Library has a large selection of books and pupils are encouraged to choose books that interest them but are within their Zone of Proximal Development. Once pupils have selected a book we encourage them to read everyday at their own pace. Pupils will be given reading time during Morning Preparation and English lessons, so it is important that they bring their Accelerated Reading book into school each day. We also ask for your support to encourage reading at home as this will help pupils to develop their literacy skills further.
Accelerated Reader Quizzes.
Once pupils have finished their book they can use the school computers to take a quiz. Accelerated Reader currently offers 152,000 quizzes which should cover most stock in the Personal Learning Centre. These help to motivate and monitor pupils reading performance and vocabulary growth. They also ensure that a pupil has actually understood what they have read. Pupils receive points for each book they read and rewards are available to pupils who reach their personal reading target.
